Overview & Scope

Any person or company providing household goods moving services for compensation within the state of Kansas must be certified by the Kansas Corporation Commission. This includes loading, transporting, and delivering personal effects and household furnishings between points in Kansas.

Movers must operate under a Certificate of Public Service and comply with all Kansas transportation laws, including insurance and tariff regulations. Operating without proper authority is unlawful.


Registration & Documentation Requirements

To operate legally in Kansas as a household goods mover:

  1. Obtain a Certificate of Public Service:
    • File an application with the KCC
    • Provide proof of business formation and identity
    • Include a business plan and tariff summary
    • Pay required filing fee
  2. Maintain Required Insurance:
    • Public liability coverage
    • Cargo insurance coverage as specified by regulation
  3. File a Tariff:
    • Must disclose all rates, fees, and service terms
    • Only filed rates may be charged
  4. Additional Requirements:
    • Register for a USDOT number
    • Ensure all vehicles meet safety standards
    • Renew credentials annually or as required

Insurance & Tariff Requirements

  • Minimum Liability Insurance must be filed with the KCC and kept current.
  • Cargo Insurance is required to cover goods transported.
  • Tariff Filing must outline pricing and conditions. Movers may not charge outside the filed tariff.

Consumer Protections

Consumers are encouraged to:

  • Confirm the mover is registered with the Kansas Corporation Commission
  • Request a written estimate and final invoice
  • Ensure the mover provides a Bill of Lading and contract
  • Report issues such as:
    • Damage to property
    • Unreasonable charges
