Overview & Scope
Anyone providing household goods moving services within Mississippi—such as loading, transporting, storing in transit, or unloading—must obtain a Certificate of Convenience and Necessity (CCN) from MDOT’s Motor Carrier Division before operating legally.
Registration & Documentation Requirements
To operate in compliance:
- Submit Application Packet through MDOT including:
- Description of services and vehicles
- Business and financial statements
- Proof of insurance or bond
- Information on other carriers in the service area
 
- Pay Filing Fee of $50 upon submission.
- Attend Hearing (if required) as arranged by the Transportation Commission.
- Receive CCN Approval before commencing operations.
- Maintain Documentation; any changes in service, ownership, or equipment must be reported.
Insurance & Financial Responsibility
Insurance must meet the specified state minimums:
- Liability Coverage: $750,000 per incident for property carriers
- Cargo Insurance:
- $5,000 for loads ≤ 3 tons
- $10,000 for loads > 3 tons
 
Applicants not domiciled in Mississippi must also file a BOC-3 (process agent designation).
Consumer Protections
Mississippi law mandates that moving carriers:
- Provide safe and adequate service and equipment
- Operate only under approved and filed rate schedules
- Honor consumer protections against overcharging and service abuse
Consumers may report violations—such as damage or unfair practices—to MDOT Motor Carrier Division.
