Overview & Scope

Wyoming classifies household goods movers as “Contract Motor Carriers.” Anyone transporting goods they don’t own in exchange for compensation for intrastate moves needs Operating Authority from WYDOT. Authority must be present in each active power unit.

Registration & Compliance Essentials

Movers must:

  1. Apply for Intrastate Operating Authority, paying the $50 filing fee.
  2. Provide a USDOT number and Federal ID.
  3. File Form E, Form H, and Form MC61E where applicable, based on cargo type.
  4. Always carry the Letter of Authority in each vehicle.
  5. Renew insurance filings promptly; operating authority is subject to suspension if insurance lapses.

Consumer Protections & Enforcement

Consumers are protected by:

  • Carrier accountability through mandatory authority and insurance.
  • WYDOT safety and compliance monitoring.
  • Strict definitions of exemptions to prevent unauthorized operation.
